Tips on what to do in an emergency

Use the right type of Fire Extinguisher

Don’t attempt to put out electrical fires with water or any other electrically conductive substance. Electrical fires should only be put out with extinguishers containing carbon dioxide, sodium bicarbonate or ammonium phosphate. Fire extinguishers should be kept up to date. Industrial sites and factories should stay prepared with a sufficient number of fire extinguishes and emergency routes.

If the fire happens at night, turn the power off at the mains and use a torch to investigate.

Electrical fires often involve damaged cabling that can cause a short circuit. A fire in the roof is particularly
worrying as it can spread quickly. Call 000 emergency services immediately.

Appliance Electrical Shock

If someone receives a shock from an electrical appliance, such as a toaster, a hairdryer, or hardware equipment, observe the following tips:

Refrain from touching the person who has received the shock as you could get injured as well.
Unplug the appliance and turn the power off at the premises’ main power switchboard to avoid any further damage.
Call your local emergency services. You should arrange for an ambulance to come as soon as possible.
Keep the injured person still and lying down until the ambulance arrives.
